Ovarian Stimulation/ Ovulation Induction

  • For women who present abnormal ovulation
  • For who ovulate normally but have unexplained infertility.

In the first case, where ovulation is irregular, the goal is to stimulate the ovaries so that they can produce an egg every month. This is achieved by administering appropriate medication at the onset of the cycle, such as clomiphene, or low doses of gonadotropins. In the second case, the goal is to stimulate ovarian function appropriately, so that two or more eggs may be produced. More precisely, the drugs administered induce the growth of multiple ovarian follicles, increasing the number of eggs produced, as well as the probability of conception per cycle. This is mainly achieved by the administration of gonadotropins. This method can also be combined with Intrauterine insemination (IUI). A possible disadvantage of this method is the increased likelihood of multiple pregnancy (twins), with all associated difficulties and problems.
