Sperm decondensation index (SDI)

The conversion of spermatids into mature spermatozoa is achieved through a series of processes involving chemical and morphological transformations. One such conversion is the replacement of histones by protamines so that DNA takes up as little space as possible inside the sperm nucleus. This process is called “sperm chromatin condensation”. The degree of sperm maturity “DNA packaging” can be measured using the SDI index. This test shows the percentage of immature spermatozoa in every semen sample.
